The final word : 10 questions to Gabriel Clément

Hello guys !

Time flies ! These last weeks, I gave you many tips to help you become a good Youtuber. To end this beautiful trip, I wanted to make something special. And for that, I've decided to contact a french Youtuber, Gabriel Clément, and to interview him. I really thank him for that. I'm not going to publish the whole interview, because it's a bit long, but I want to give you the main ideas. If you want the whole transcription, just send me an e-mail. Just so you know, Gabriel Clément makes one video every day and he lives thanks to his Youtube channel with the same business model as Antoine Blanchemaison. I've chosen the 10 most interesting questions I've asked to Gabriel Clément to understand better the life of a Youtuber. Hope you'll like it !

1) Hi Gabriel. Could you present your channel in a few words ?
The main theme of my channel is habits. How we can change each and every aspect of our life, achieve our objectives through little daily actions that we are going to repeat, again and again, and that are automated.

2) Was it difficult to shoot your first video ?
Yes !! When you have never done that, it's unnatural. I prepared the subject of my video, and I told myself "globally, that's what I want to say".

3) Now do you write the scripts of your videos, or just outlines ?
Just outlines, but detailed outlines.

4) Is it difficult to be spontaneous behind the camera ?
Now it is easy, but before it was very difficult. To make good videos, you have to be natural, that is to say to talk like I'm talking to you right now. And you can manage to do that only by training, again and again and again and again.
Now when I see the first videos I made, I realized I was less natural. So you have to pay attention to two things : how you make your videos, and how you are in your videos.

5) How do you organize your days ?
So I've got a morning ritual : meditation, visualization, and I take a shower. After that, I do languages, as I learn Japanese. After that, I work on editing with the last video I have filmed. Then I film a video and and I prepare the next one.

6) Between editing, filming, preparation... is it long to make one video ?
I need one hour. It's not a lot, but the video is only the part you can see ! I also have to think about my premium content, or to read. I could work less, but I love it. I think I could work between 4 and 5 hours every day, week-ends included.

7) Do you like reading ?
Yes, I like personal development in the broad sense. It can be psychology, about stress, habits, or even marketing.

8) Do many people buy your premium content ?
Usually, on a selling page, the conversion rate will be between 2% and 4%. For me, it's 3%. It means if 100 persons go on your page, between 2 and 4 people will buy your product. So if you have a large audience, you will be able to sell more of your private content.

9) How do people see you, what relation do they have with you ?
I think I'm between their friend and their mentor. We are not experts, we are very close to our followers. Maybe I'm inspiring ? That is the idea I want them to have about me.

10) To finish with, I would like to ask you THE essential question : do you think everyone can become a Youtuber ?
Yes, I think everybody can. If you really want it, you can, nothing is impossible. I think Tibo Inshape's business model is really complicated. Mine is not easy, but more accessible. However, it requires investment. But the thing is, we live in a society in which people want good results very quickly. Many people stops because when they start, they don't understand how hard you have to work. But if you are patient, you can succeed, for example in 2 years.

Now you have a better idea of  what you need to think about to become a youtuber ! Regularity, being close to your audience, being passionate and persevering. Ready, steady... go !!!

How to earn money when you are a Youtuber

That is the BIG question. You have your Youtube channel, your identity, your audience. You have everything you need to succeed on Youtube. Now, you have to do this thing that will turn your passion into a real job. I'm going to show you different examples of ways to earn money thanks to youtube.

The monetization of your videos

It's a function that exists on Youtube, but as you can imagine, it is useful only if many people watch your videos. The money you earn depends on the number of views of each video. Not everyone can do it.

It works thanks to advertising :

Just so you know, AdSense also works for blogs.

Product placement

The concept is very simple : a brand pay you to talk about its products in a video. Personally, I've never seen a Youtuber doing that explicitly, even if I'm sure some of them do this. For a Youtuber, of course, it's better to hide the truth and talk about the product without saying he is paid for that. But it is forbidden : according to a law, if you do a product placement, you have to say it to your audience in the video. That's why I wouldn't advise you to use this method, because it threatens your authenticity (and audience likes, above all, the authenticity of their youtubers), but you have to know it exists and, for a very influential youtuber, it can be very profitable.

It is very difficult to know if, when a youtuber mentions a product, it is honest or just a product placement. Difficult for the audience, but also difficult for the law...

Tibo Inshape, once again, has decided to have fun with all these youtubers practices, to caricature them and the law while making fun of himself. Indeed, in the the video Ce livre est scandaleux !! he talks about the book he has written. In other videos, he talks about the tee-shirts he sells, but just before, he says "product placement". And sometimes, he says "I can assure you they won't be any product placement in this video... [silence] buy my tee-shirts !!!". It's very funny ! Just for fun, watch the video Le pire placement de produit, it is really great ! As for Antoine Blanchemaison, he doesn't use this method.

Selling products

Both Tibo Inshape and Antoine Blanchemaison use this method, even if they don't do it the same way. Tibo Inshape, as many youtubers did, wrote a book.

As I told you, Tibo Inshape also sells tee-shirts on which he writes sentences he often says in his videos, his punchlines.

Antoine Blanchemaison has a freemium business model. Freemium, that is to say both free and premium. A part of his content is free, and everybody can read it. His 3 videos every week are free. It's the best way to find a big audience and to make them interested in the message you want to deliverer. And then, for people who really like them and want to go further, he proposes different "formations" (what we could call, in english, education, or training). He often says : in my free videos, I develop ideas ; in my "formations", I show you how to apply them. He also declared that his free videos are meant to be watched by everyone, whereas his premium videos focus on a specific theme, so it interests just a part of his audience.

He has sold more than 500 "formations" since he started his Youtube channel, and the price has increased, now each one costs 147 euros (the price is lower at the beginning, he proposes a launch price).

Amazon Affiliate Program

Some youtubers earn money thanks to this program. The concept is simple : if you have decided to talk about a book in a video, you just have to put the link under the video, leading to the selling page of the book on Amazon. If someone clicks on your link and then buy the book on Amazon's website, you earn a certain percentage of the original price. An example of Youtuber who does that ? Raj, from the Autodisciple channel. He often summarizes books in his videos and puts a link.

Little advantages

If you have enough visibility, you can gain many little advantages. Some brands just hope you will like their products and talk about them on your own free will. So they send you products without conditions. You are not compelled to talk about them. For example, booktubers (youtubers talking about book) receive many books every month. Fitness youtubers can also have reductions for Sport equipment.

Good luck !

I think there might be other ways to earn money thanks to your Youtube channel, but here you've got different interesting examples. Now you are able to become a battle-hardened youtuber !

Accessible Youtubers or stars ?

Last week, I published an article about Youtubers and social media, saying, at the beginning, that Youtubers have to be accessible if they want people to like them and identify to them. Yes, authenticity is very loved.

So now, the question is : are youtubers as accessible as they seem to be ? Could we meet them if we wanted to ? As a youtuber, if you are really decided to create a strong relationship with your audience, soon or later you will have to ask yourself how you are going to meet your audience and to be able to keep meeting people when you have a lot of followers. The key term here is IRL (In Real Life). The passage from the virtual world of Youtube to the concrete life of IRL communication is crucial, but fortunately, Youtubers seem to like it.

Different solutions exist.

The "followers meet-ups" ("rencontres abonnés")

How to organize it ?

This solution is possible only if you have just a little audience. When too many people like you and want to meet you, it would be simply impossible to organize such events without provoking a diplomatic incidence. Imagine if Tibo Inshape wanted to meet his 2 million followers…!

But for Youtubers like Antoine Blanchemaison, it is still possible as not so many people want or can move to Paris to meet this youtuber they like. So :

1) Decide the date, the place of the meeting, and find a way to know precisely how many people will come. Your are the organizer so it is your job to find a place with enough room. Besides, if you want to organize the meeting in a bar, for example, make sure the bar is ready to welcome many people. They have to know.

2) Also very important, imagine a theme or the conversations you can have with your audience, so you won't end meeting your audience saying "well, … hi… how are you…" But usually people come for the same reasons, and you can easily connect them.

3) Globally, never forget that you are the organizer, the reason why people came. That makes you a leader. You need to assume it and to be ready for that role.

Why is it a good idea to organize such an event ?

Antoine Blanchemaison has made a video about this kind of event, to explain why he finds it great, so my arguments will lean on his video :

- It brings motivation. Sometimes, when you are a Youtuber, you can feel alone, wondering if what you are doing really makes sense. Meeting your followers is really great to understand there are real people behind the screen. Youtube metrics are essential, but they are abstract. Event the comments don't really represent the impact you can have on people and what relation they have with you and your videos.

- It's a way to have your followers' feedbacks : you can ask them what they really like, what they don't like, how you can help them and be valuable to them. Face-to-face feedbacks, for example, have helped Antoine BM find new ideas for his premium content, as they helped him knowing what problems people have and giving them the help they really needed.

- Third argument : what Antoine BM calls "net-working" : you meet people that can have the same job and can become future partners. It is a bit different for a sport channel, but the idea is the same, you can meet people who share the same passion, train with them...

- You can create a community and bind it together. It is very great for these people as they might share a passion or values, but they don't know each other.

- Last but nos least : friendship ! Such an event is really on opportunity for you to find you friends and share many things together, you can meet really interesting people. So go !

Youtubers salons

I want to introduce this solution even if it is not within the reach of everyone. In France, an event was created in 2015, the Video City Paris : it lasts two days and you can meet many Youtubers. Of course, only influential Youtubers are present, and we don't know how they are chosen or contacted :

But just know that and, if you want to become a Youtuber, don't hesitate to go to the Video City as a visitor ! It may be a good experience to meet your favorite Youtubers, or to discover new Youtubers. I'm planning on going, so if someone wants to come with me, just send me an e-mail !

Specific salons : fitness salons

Some Youtubers, such as Tibo Inshape, also go to specific salons where followers can meet them. For example, the Body Fitness Salon that is organized every year in Paris. It's an event around a specific theme, fitness, and it's an excellent way to meet people who share the same passion, but without causing a diplomatic incident (well, who knows...) with all your followers showing up !

Your turn !

Once you have chosen the theme of your Youtube channel, don't hesitate to explore the web and to discover events in which you could go to meet your followers. In any case, it is essential that you meet your followers in real life, it is part of the Youtubers' communication, but I'm sure you will love it !

Just one last rule : don't forget to tell me so I can meet you !!

Youtubers and social media

Hi everyone !

Today, I would like to explore with you all the elements of communication that are not directly connected to Youtube. Though it is essential to think about your SEO strategy on Youtube to find an audience, it is also very very important to exist on different social media, to be active, alive, to have a direct contact with your followers, and also to show that you are ready to meet people in real life. It is maybe the main secret of all the Youtubers : there are, or at least they seem to be very accessible, as if they were our friend and as if it would be easy to meet them (and it's better if you effectively can meet them sometimes). Maybe it is the big difference between a Youtuber and what we call a "star". The stars seem inaccessible. The Youtubers look like us, we can identificate to them very easily… if they make an effort to let us do so, of course. So, let's study how Tibo Inshape and Antoine Blanchemaison communicate beyond their Youtube channel.

Presence on social media

I thought it was a necessity for everyone to be very active on social media, almost every day, but studying different channels, I realized I need to have finely-shaded opinions. It seems "big" youtubers, those who have a lot of followers, are more likely to use very often their social media than youtubers with less followers. Interactivity only comes with many followers commenting your posts.

Right now, Tibo Inshape has 2 382 885 followers on Youtube, 937 000 on Instagram, 863 430 on Facebook and 223 124 on Twitter. It means that 39% of his youtube audience follow him on Instagram, 36,2% on Facebook (if we suppose everyone following him on Facebook also follows him on Youtube),  and 9,3% on Twitter.

As for Antoine Blanchemaison, he has 22 029 followers on Youtube, 7912 on Facebook, 2174 on Instagram and 2819 on Twitter. It means that 35,9% of his audience follow him on Facebook, 12,8% on Twitter and 9,9% on Instagram.

The figures are close between two very different youtubers in terms of percentage for Facebook and Twitter. The more followers you have on youtube, the more followers you'll have on Facebook and Twitter. With this first analysis, it seems if you have to choose only one social media, it would be a better idea to choose Facebook as people tend to be more numerous on it than on twitter. Tibo Inshape, contrary to Antoine Blanchemaison, is very influencial on Instagram. We can suppose this difference can be related to the subject of each channel. Antoine BM has a more abstract subject (freedom for example), whereas Tibo Inshape focuses on body-building, which means that people like his videos but also like his body. So they love seeing pictures of him and his muscles on Instagram.

You can also use snapchat, but I don't have any figures for that. In any case, it is a good way to make people feel closer to you, to show your daily life...

What content can we post on social media ?

This is also a very important question. From my personal opinion, I really think too many people use Facebook or Twitter as a simple information relay. They share the last video they have posted on Youtube, and that's it. It may inform people who follow them on Twitter and Facebook but not on Youtube when a video is published, but I think it is a minority. So it is not useful and they tend to publish the same content on Facebook & Twitter, ignoring the specificities of each social media.

Fortunately, Tibo Inshape and Antoine BM seem to have understood quite well all the possibilities social media can offer. Studying their Twitter and Facebook accounts, I made this typology of the types of posts one can post. Again, you can click to make the view full screen.

Comment or not to comment, that is the question

When you have more and more followers, you have more and more comments, that is logical. You can't answer to everyone. So is it better to try to answer to many people, to never answer to anyone, or to answer just sometimes ? The answer is, there is not an universal answer.

Comment sometimes...

It is the case of Tibo Inshape. He chooses people at random, maybe the first ones to comment his videos, and he answers things like "BOUUUM" or "DAAAMMMNN". He doesn't really answer to serious questions. It's the same on Facebook or Twitter.

... or almost never ?

Antoine Blanchemaison had decided to never answer to people on Youtube, It seems he has changed his mind as the video where he had explain why has disappeared and as now, he answers to people on Youtube. I also think it is possible to contact him on Facebook.

Do it !

Globally, I suggest that you answer to people when you can, it will make you more accessible, and more appreciated.

How find an audience

In this article, I want to present a few techniques that will help you create your community, and create your audience. How can you make your videos more visible on Youtube ? That's the question we are going to answer.

Clickbait

To begin with, here is the definition of clickbait : "Clickbait is a pejorative term describing web content that is aimed at generating online advertising revenue, especially at the expense of quality or accuracy, relying on sensationalist headlines or eye-catching thumbnail pictures".

To be clearer, it means you choose your title, for example, only to generate more clicks on your videos and then, hopefully, more followers. There are types of titles that easily attract many people. Tibo Inshape likes playing with this "rule" to gain more followers, even if his videos don't loose their quality.

It is the same for thumbnail pictures. Tibo Inshape like mocking himself. In his videos, he talks about girls, calling her "une petite", and shows he loves girls, big big "boobs" and a big big "booty", who do body-building. Of course, he respects women, he considers everyone has the right to have the body THEY want instead of the body other people want. But it is a joke that comes back in almost every video. So now, look at this thumbnail picture :

Here you can see many girls. I identified three reasons to explain why it was a good idea :

1) It is a way for his audience to laugh and recognize his funny personality.
2) It is a way to gain new followers who really will be attracted by this picture.
3) In one of his videos I saw once, he admitted himself that he put girls on the pictures to attract people. But it's a kind of auto-mockery, and it's perfectly honest, so we can't be mad at him ! We can just laugh with him and tell ourselves "yes, he knows the rules".

So it was smart of him, I think !

Videos about a famous Youtuber

When you want to see a Youtuber's video, it's highly likely you are going to write his name in Youtube's search engine.

So, for example, it's more likely that someone will write "Tibo Inshape" on Youtube than Antoine BM. If you write the name of a youtuber, you will find two things :

1) All the videos this Youtuber has made.
2) All the videos other Youtubers have made about this youtuber, because the word is in the title.

So if you make a video about a famous youtuber, you'll have more chances to reinforce the visibility of your video. That is why Antoine Blanchemaison has made 3 videos "Comment devenir..." (how to become...), that, he told in one video, helped him gain many followers.

Tibo Inshape and Pierre Croce are two famous french youtubers. Casey Neistat is a very famous american youtuber. Of course Antoine BM really wanted to help people improving their own channel when he studied these youtubers' channels. But for sure it was also a way to gain more followers.

Videos with other youtubers

According to Antoine BM, it is one of the best ways to reach a larger audience. The concept is very simple : if you do a video with a Youtuber that has many followers, they will know you and some of them will follow you. They are two ways to do that :

1) Collaborative videos. Making a video with someone, either around a specific theme, or a kind of vlog. Thanks to a video he made with Norman, one of the most famous and influential youtubers in France, Tibo Inshape have gained many followers, even followers that don't practice fitness or body-building.

2) If you think it will be too difficult to convince youtubers to make a video with you, you can simply interview them, I think they will accept more easily. Now I can tell you how I discovered Gabriel Clément, for example : a friend made me discover Tibo Inshape who did a video with Marine Leleu (a fitness youtuber), who was interviewed by Antoine Blanchemaison, who interviewed Gabriel Clément on his channel. Interviews are a good way to be more visible on Youtube. It can be a win-win situation, each youtubers introducing the other to their audience. Unfortunately, as Gabriel Clément told me, it can be difficult. Youtubers often... don't answer if you don't have a large audience. But try, talk to modest youtubers, and then you will be able to climb the ladder little by little.

And many other ways...

I could do an entire blog only about this subject. They are many ways to improve your SEO. Key words in the titles or in the descriptions of the videos, for example... Unfortunately, I cannot talk about everything. I just gave you what I think are the best ideas. If you are interested in that subject, I suggest that you watch this video, made by Antoine Blanchemaison :

Just keep in mind one thing : your number of followers is important, of course, but as Antoine Blanchemaison often tells us, you have to find a qualified audience. People that are really interested in your ideas, your message. If they follow you just because they liked one of your vlog, and that's it, it doesn't mean anything (and by the way, they won't buy your products). It is useless to look for followers just to have more followers. They have to be interested and interesting, it's the key. So be careful about how you find new followers, some techniques will bring "qualified" followers, and some techniques will bring followers that are not really your target.

Technical aspects

Hey guys !

I wanted to write a short article to talk to you about the most technical aspects of the Youtuber's life. I won't be long as I don't have many technical knowledge, but I still needed to tell you one very important thing : never, never forget the quality of your video, technically speaking.

A beautiful picture

You have to make a beautiful video. If the light is yellow, or if you have a bad camera, people won't like watching your videos. If the quality of the picture is bad, why would I watch a video instead of listening to a podcast ?

Antoine Blanchemaison has recently bought a drone, it makes beautiful pictures.

A good sound

You need to have a good microphone, buying a real one is the best. We have to hear you without making an effort.

A good rythm

You need to think about the whole structure of your videos. To know what will happen, what you will say. If you don't, it will be boring and not dynamic. It's like shooting a movie. The film directors know all the shots they want to do. Maybe you don't have to be that precise for Youtube, but you have to know precisely what will happen and what you will talk about in your video.

A good background

It's also very important. Admire the background of this video. The sun, the beach, the light... you are more likely to be convinced before the waves than before a cupboard.

Don't forget editing !

Editing is essential for at least three reasons :

1) To cut all the hesitations, long moments of silence during your videos. It makes them more fluent, more impacting. Only the editing will prevent you from being boring, even if your oral communication is great. You have to cut all the superfluous moments of your videos.

2) To add nice elements on your videos, that will appear on the screen :

3) To add musics in your videos. For example, in Antoine Blanchemaison's vlog, the music is really an added value to his video. We are under the impression we are watching a movie or a real report.

Still not convinced ?

Well, here you can see one of the first videos made by Tibo Inshape.

We must admit he has made progress ! Which videos do you prefer to watch, the most recent ones, or this one ? For my part, the choice is made !

How to build your identity

People like authenticity, humor or serious but captivating subjects, "motivation" videos, but, above all, they like Youtubers with their own identity. I think this notion is really the key on Youtube, more than on any social media. I'm going to give you some tips to build your own identity.

Structure of your videos

Youtubers' videos often have the same structure. For example, Tibo Inshape always begins his videos with this catcher :

"DAAAMMN les gens, j'espère que vous allez bien, c'est Tibo Inshape et c'est un plaisir de vous parler aujourd'hui !"

And all his videos end the same way :

"Et surtout n'oubliez pas que VOUS êtes les meilleurs, BOUUUM !"

These sentences are like his trademark. As for Antoine Blanchemaison, he always ends his video saying :

"Et surtout, reste / restez libres"

And when he interviews someone, he asks him to say it.
These sentences are easy to remember and they reflect the main values of the channel. Many personal-oriented youtubers often begin or end their videos by this kind of strong sentences.

To finish with, most of their videos often last the same time, but you can vary a little bit. Sometimes it lasts 3-4 minutes, and sometimes it's more between 7 and 11.

A specific vocabulary

It's not a technique all youtubers use, but it can be really interesting. Tibo Inshape has built his own vocabulary, that we can't really understand if we are not used to watching his videos. For example :

- "Meules énormes" = big "boobs"
- "Petite veine du bibi" = the vein that appears on your biceps when you are muscular and eat well
- "Petite" = a girl
- "Le Temple" = the fitness center

This technique leans on the repetitive comedy. We rapidly can associate Tibo Inshape with these terms, and he makes us laugh. Don't hesitate to build your own vocabulary and invent your  own punchlines !

Oral communication

The importance of your body language

Maybe it is the most essential aspect. You have to be fluent, and to develop your identity through your verbal and non verbal communication. “Your body language shapes who you are”, that was the title of Amy Cuddy’s talk for TED, and it is so true ! I invite you to watch and re-watch this conference. Paying attention to your non verbal communication is a necessity to succeed on Youtube. You can’t just forget this point, saying “I just want to be normal”. One of Watzlawick's communication axioms is : "one cannot not communicate" : even your non-language is a language, the silence is communication, and if you don’t have any apparent body language, it still means something and reveals something about you. So it’s more wise, instead of suffering your body language, to think about it and choose it. Control the image you reflect.

For that, you can write the script of your videos, of have a plan, but don't read too much ! Or don't read at all if you can. I think Tibo Inshape write all his scripts, and that Antoine Blanchemaison just have a plan. Here is a comment I found on Antoine Blanchemaison's channel :

You can also work on your voice, your tone, on the way you look at your audience (well, at your camera actually).

Youtube = theater ?

Finally, being a Youtuber is like being a movie actor. Do you really think actors just go on the stage improvising ? Do you think they just have to learn their text, and that's it ? No no no. To be a good actor, you have to work on everything. It's the same for Youtubers. What would Simone de Beauvoir say ?

One is not born a Youtuber but rather becomes one...

lundi 17 octobre 2016

What theme for a Youtube channel ?

So, that is the BIG question, the kind of question you can’t avoid. Indeed, to become a Youtuber, you have to know what you will talk about. And no, If you ask me “can’t I talk about everything, one video about something, and then a video about another thing ?”, I will answer a big N-O. Well, obviously it is possible to be original and creative, and not talking about the same thing in each video might be a wise decision.

But, before choosing to be diversified, you have to create a global identity, to let people associate you to a big, general idea. People like simplicity, rapidity, and they don’t want to make an effort. If you want them to spend their time watching your videos, you’ll have to catch their attention immediately ; and you won’t be able to do that if don’t have a single idea what message you want to convey through your channel.

So identify one, two or maybe three ideas you want to develop. Obviously, some themes will be more difficult to choose than others, as some themes are already very competitive : personal development, fitness, gaming etc. It could be interesting for your to realize like a "market study" around the themes that could interest you, to know how many youtubers already talk about the same subjects, how they do it, how they can inspire you but also how you can differ from them...

Just watch this video, shot by Antoine Blanchemaison, you’ll have some precious advice about what subjects you can choose.

This is the key idea of his video : if you want to find a subject that will interest an audience, you have to find a theme that will fill a specific need, and these needs are the ones presented in the Maslow's hierarchy of needs.

Once you have your global theme, you will be able to think about the “sub-subjects” you would like to develop, but, as I said, do that only AFTER having built your identity. It’s very important. Essential. By “sub-subjects”, I mean all the possible variants of your theme, and, secondly, the possibilities of evolution.

This is a non-exhaustive list of themes we can find in Antoine BM's and Tibo Inshape's videos (just click to make the view full screen) :

Globally, they are faithful to the theme of their channel, but there are thousands of possible ways to talk about it. For example, if Tibo Inshape wants to talk about a job interview or a CV, he does, but through the body-building.

So never forget this idea : be faithful to your core identity, and propose videos around it. You can explore very different subjects, don't worry, you'll still have many ideas !

And last but not least : once you have developed the general idea of your channel and what you want to talk about, think about the values you want to develop. It's also essential. It will really reinforce your identity and give a reason for people to follow you. Tibo Inshape wants to keep democratizing body-building, that still suffers from prejudices, to encourage people to do sport, to be inspirational, and he also values humor and auto-mockery. Antoine Blanchemaison, above all, values freedom and, through this idea, independence thanks to the web. If your values are strong, people will find your message more interesting and impacting.

So now you have all the keys you need to find the theme of your Youtube's channel ! Tell me everything : what have you decided to talk about ? What are your values ?

The importance of working hard

Today, I would like to talk to you about the importance of working hard to become a Youtuber. As I said in my first article, one could think it is easy, that it's only a question of intuition; that making a video is fast and that you don't have to work that hard...

Well, it's not true. As I watched Tibo Inshape's and Antoine BM's videos, I realized they work really hard. Tibo Inshape makes 2 videos every week, before it was 3. Just watch this video : are you really under the impression he doesn't work hard ? Could you really say he is lazy and that making a video is easy ? No. What we can realize is simple : he works hard, probably more than 35 hours every week. Of course, his job is great and he loves it, but he is still a hard worker.

Antoine BM makes 3 videos every week, but during almost one year, he made one video every day, from monday to saturday. Here he explains why :

I think now you realize how motivated and passionate you have to be to succeed on Youtube. I think it is more important than your apparent "talent" or your relations... To become a Youtuber, you have to want it deeply, to be really patient, and above all, to work hard.

You don't have the time ? You have a full-time job that leaves you no time to work ? That, dear readers, is not a good reason, it is just an excuse. I suggest you watch this video, made by Antoine Blanchemaison, who tells us how he wrote one article every day (at the time he just had a blog) during an internship that was "hell" for him.

You have to be responsible, and replace "I don't have the time", by "I don't take the time". We all loose time when we stay a long time on Facebook or when we spend the night watching the TV... Of course, you have the right to be tired and to do something that doesn't need much energy. Of course. But you have to know it's a choice. And when you are tired, when you just want to do nothing, well, during these moments, you will be able to really know how motivated you are to become a Youtuber. If you sit down with a paper and a pen, or your computer, and begin working on your project instead of resting because you are too "tired", then you'll know you are motivated.

So stop saying "I don't have the time" because we all can find 30 minutes to work on our project. Just try to find them and stop losing time... if you deeply want it.

Good luck everyone, and good work !

Youtube through Tibo Inshape's & Antoine Blanchemaison's eyes

(just click to make the view full screen)

Who ?

I would love to study all youtubers on earth, but I must admit it would be a bit long and boring for you. So I've decided to analyse Youtube in general but through the experience of Tibo Inshape and Antoine Blanchemaison. Their channels will be my examples when I'm going to explain general ideas and concepts.

Tibo Inshape is a fitness and humor youtuber, who has conquered an audience larger that just persons interested in fitness.

Antoine Blanchemaison is a more personal development oriented youtuber, as his purpose with his channel is to help people gain more freedom and autonomy. Thus, it is more specific than sport or humor.

Why did I choose these youtubers ?

As you may have noticed, the two youtubers I've chosen to study are very different : number of followers, theme of their channel... but they have one big common point : they live thanks to their channel. They earn enough money to live and they don't have a job besides Youtube.

They are very different one from another, but they share specific communication strategies to succeed, and also have specific strategies adapted to their own model. It was interesting for me to study their similarities and differences.

And now...

Now, before reading my articles, I invite you to watch some of their videos, to know better what I'm talking about. It is not indispensable, as I will put videos, but I think my analysis will be more helpful for you if you've seen some of their videos.

What you MUST NOT do to make a good video

I've given this a lot of thought, and I've decided to make a little video to show you all the mistakes one can do when one makes a video. Today, I'm becoming the worst youtuber ever !

"HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA", you are thinking, laughing, wondering what the hell this girl is talking about, asking yourself " why is she talking about spiders in the middle of her video ?". Well, that's the point. I'm going to tell you all the questions you can ask yourself while watching the video, to help you understand why this video is so bad, as an introduction to many aspects I will develop on this blog.

- What is this light ? It's dark, and the colors are awful. The sound is OK but not perfect.

- What is this background ? Do I really see a Vampire Diaries poster on the wall ?

- What is this picture ??? The video doesn't even use the whole screen. Did she really use A PHONE to shoot her video ? REALLY ? It seems she did, she couldn't even filmed without moving her hand, or trembling, who knows. Poor girl, she must have been terrified to shoot this video.

- What is this spider she talks about and doesn't even show ? Can't we see it ? Or she could have cut this part during the editing... or yes, right, I forgot : she DOESN'T know the word "editing"

- What are all these "errrrrrrrrm" ? Can't she make a whole sentence without hesitating every second ? Or can't she simply cut these "errrrrm" doing the editing ? No, no, no. As I said, this poor young girl doesn't know the word "editing". Does she even know the word "camera" or computer ? Nothing is less certain...

- And what is this voice anyway ? It's boooriiiing, really. No personality, no identity, and she seems tired. "You have to sleep young lady, and to make theater !"

- By the way, what is this cute, adorable little wolly hat ? <3

Welcome to youtubers' world !

© Plymouth University

Hi guys !

I am really happy to write my first article on this new blog. I’ve been writing blogs for many years (you can send me an e-mail if you want the links!), but this one is the result of a big idea that crossed my mind a few months ago. This time, I don’t want to share all my thoughts on a blog, or to make you laugh or cry (well, who knows…).

I don’t know if I wrote this on my other personal blog, but the thing is, I love Youtube. Yes, I can tell you now, I’m in love with Youtube, and I’m in love with Youtubers. This love story began maybe one or two years ago. At the time, I already liked Norman’s or Cyprien’s videos (they are very famous french youtubers), but I just liked watching one video from time to time, that's it. But one day, a friend showed me a video of Tibo Inshape, a french fitness youtuber, and I really, really, really loved it. You know, I’m pretty sure I really began fitness thanks to him. And then, thanks to his videos, I discovered Marine Leleu, Sissy Mua, other fitness Youtubers. And I realized how strong the power of Youtubers is, how people we don’t really know but love anyway can influence our lives.

And then, from a video to another, I discovered other youtubers, who talked about different things (not only fitness), such as Antoine Blanchemaison, Gabriel Clément… who are personal development oriented youtubers. Not that I really needed help to organize my life, but their videos really motivate me and are very inspiring.

All these videos made me dream, again and again… It must be so nice to be a Youtuber…! It must be such a great life to meet other youtubers, to have a job we created, freedom…

But, but, but… I just forgot this one thing that made me suddenly really interrogative : by the way, how does it work to be a youtuber ? Seems really easy, but I’m sure if I did videos, I wouldn’t be able to become a real Youtuber, the kind of youtuber that can gain money and live thanks to it. How do they do this ? I’m under the impression that maybe there is something behind all this, that can explain how such people can work, have a big audience…

So, guys, instead of trying to become a Youtuber, because I’m pretty sure it would be a waste of time (yes, I promise, people who watch videos on youtube will be better of without me), I’ve decided to analyze how it is possible to do it if we really want it. It’s not really my situation, as I don’t like showing my face on the Internet and I prefer the mystery of a blog and simple articles. However, I really wanna help you fulfilling you dream to become a Youtuber if it's your dream.

If you want it badly, I’m sure you will be able to do it, because I’m sure there are techniques to succeed. The purpose of my blog is precisely to show you these techniques.

Don’t hesitate to comment my articles, to tell me information I don’t know, or even to show me your Youtube channel, and to tell me how you managed to use my analysis and advice to make your videos and find an audience !

I hope you will like this new blog, and I wish you all a good reading !
